Baile de San Valentín

Valentine’s day is one of my least favorite holidays.  Personally, I prefer the day after Valentine’s day when all the chocolate is 75 percent off and my facebook newsfeed is not clogged with gaudy gifts and cliche couple pictures.

However, this year my dislike for Valentine’s day subsided a bit and I had a beautiful way to celebrate love. Many of the people we work with at the Foundation Jose Rivera Chonillo are adults in Puerto López that do not have the options or opportunities for recreational activities and/or they are discriminated against in public and social activities. So, we had a night of dancing just for the people of the foundation.

The night started at 5:30pm when the girls arrived to get their hair and make up done by volunteers.  At 6pm the boys met at the Foundation to go get haircuts in town.  At 7pm we all met in the ballroom (okay, a small room with some tables and chairs and a speaker system) at Hostal Tuzco to start the party.  At the party, there were delicious snacks, a live band, and beautiful decorations. Each guest also received a gift of chocolates.  We played musical chairs and limbo, listened to some beautiful songs sang by Don Bolivar, and danced until our feet hurt (or until 10pm).

This was the most wonderful way I have spent Valentine’s day in a while, to love on some very special people.
